Wizz Air Vouchers: When They’re Offered and If You Should Accept

If your Wizz Air flight has been cancelled, delayed or overbooked, you may find yourself offered Wizz Air vouchers instead of monetary refunds or compensation. While this may seem like a quick and easy solution, it’s important to understand when airlines are allowed to offer their vouchers and whether you should accept them.

What Are Wizz Air Vouchers?

Wizz Air vouchers are essentially prepaid credits that can be used as payment for future bookings.

Like many airlines, Wizz Air issues different types of vouchers to its passengers.

The two main kinds are:

  • Gift Cards – Standard travel gift cards available for purchase directly on the airline’s website. They can be redeemed to pay for flights. Anyone can buy them — either for themselves or as a gift.
  • Compensation/Refund Vouchers – Similar in function to gift cards, but these are provided by Wizz Air as compensation or refund when your flight is disrupted (for example, due to delays, cancellations, or overbooking).

Getting a gift card is straightforward: you either purchase one yourself or receive it as a present.

But what about compensation vouchers — or vouchers you’re given instead of a cash refund for a cancelled flight? If you’d like to know how those work and whether you should accept them, keep reading.

Refunds and Compensation: Your Legal Rights

Under EU261 and UK261 regulations, passengers are entitled to:

  • A cash refund if they choose not to travel on a cancelled or overbooked flight.
  • Compensation, in cash, if the flight was delayed, cancelled or overbooked due to the airline’s fault.

Airlines are legally obliged to pay refunds and compensation in cash unless you explicitly agree to receive vouchers.

We often say “in cash,” but in practice refunds and compensation are usually paid by bank transfer. You can request cash at an airline office, but in most cases the payment is transferred directly to your bank account.

When Wizz Air May Offer Vouchers?

Let’s look at the most common scenarios.

  1. For refunds: If your flight is cancelled, Wizz Air may offer vouchers for the value of your ticket. However, you are not required to accept them.
  2. As flight compensation: If you are owed compensation (for a delay, cancellation, or denied boarding), Wizz Air may offer vouchers of a higher value than the cash payout, though not always. Accepting Wizz Air vouchers is entirely optional.
  3. If you cancel a flight: In most cases, Wizz Air’s cheapest tickets are non-refundable, which means you will not get your money back if you cancel voluntarily. However, there are exceptions. Passengers who purchase more flexible fares, add-ons like WIZZ Flex, or cancel within 24 hours of booking may be entitled to a refund or credit. Even then, the airline may issue a voucher instead of cash, but you can usually request a direct refund depending on the ticket type and circumstances.

Should You Accept Wizz Air Vouchers?

It depends on your situation.

When might it be a good idea?

  1. You fly Wizz Air frequently and plan to book new flights soon.
  2. Wizz Air offers you a voucher worth more than the cash refund or compensation.
  3. You are comfortable keeping travel credit or Wizz Air vouchers.

When You Should Avoid Vouchers (And Ask for Wizz Air Voucher Refund)

  1. You don’t plan to fly with Wizz Air again soon.
  2. You prefer flexibility and the guarantee of cash in your account.
  3. You’re worried about airline policy changes or restrictions on voucher use.

Wizz Air Voucher Refund: How to Request Cash Instead?

When it comes to converting a Wizz Air voucher into cash, there are two key situations to be aware of:

  1. Refundable vouchers. If you have a refundable Wizz Air voucher, you can request to exchange it for its cash value. Log in to your Wizz Air account or use their refund form. Select refund to bank account instead of voucher.
  2. Vouchers issued instead of cash compensation. So many airlines issue vouchers in place of refunds or compensation, even though regulations clearly state that passengers are entitled to monetary compensation. If this happens, you should contact the airline directly, explain the situation, and request your rightful cash payment instead of a voucher.

Don’t hesitate to assert your rights — you are not required to accept a voucher unless you explicitly agree to it.
