How Much Is Flight Delay Compensation?

If your Wizz Air flight was delayed, cancelled, or overbooked, you may be entitled to compensation under EU Regulation 261/2004 (EU261) and UK261. But how much exactly? The compensation amount depends on two factors: the distance of your flight and the length of the delay.

In this guide, we’ll explain how much is flight delay compensation, flight cancellation and overbooking compensation — and show you how to calculate Wizz Air compensation step by step.

How Much Is Flight Delay Compensation? How to Calculate It?

The same rules and amounts apply to flight cancellation and denied boarding compensation.

Step 1: Check Your Flight Distance

Compensation is set at fixed amounts based on distance:

  • Short-haul flights (up to 1,500 km): €250 per passenger
  • Medium-haul flights (1,500–3,500 km): €400 per passenger
  • Long-haul flights (over 3,500 km): €600 per passenger

Here is how you can calculate your Wizz Air flight delay compensation. All you have to know is the approximate distance of your flight.

When your destination is within the EU:

€250

If the distance of your flight is
up to 1500 km

€400

If the distance of your flight is between 1500 – 3500 km

When your destination is outside the EU:

€250

If the distance of your flight is
up to 1500 km

€400

If the distance of your flight is between 1500 – 3500 km

€600

If the distance of your flight is more than 3500 km

Some examples:

Short flight: Paris → Milan (640 km): €250

Medium flight: London → Tromso (2250 km): €400

Long flight: Budapest → Dubai (4000 km): €600

Step 2: Check the Delay on Arrival

The compensation also depends on how long you were delayed at your final destination (not just departure time). Always check your actual arrival time (doors open), as that’s what matters for compensation.

Compensation amounts by delay length:

  • 3+ hours delay: Compensation is due.
  • Under 3 hours: No compensation.
  • Long-haul flights (3,500 km+): If you arrive 3–4 hours late, you are entitled to €300 (half of the €600 maximum).

Some examples:

Paris → Kutaisi (3,200 km, delayed 3h 30m): €400

Budapest → Dubai (4000 km, delayed 3h 45m): €300 (reduced long-haul rate)

Step 3: Check the Cause of Disruption

Compensation is only payable if the disruption was within the airline’s control.

Other EU Air Passenger Rights

In addition to compensation, you’re also entitled to:

  • Meals and refreshments during the wait.
  • Hotel and transfers if you’re stranded overnight (more about it – Right to Care)
  • Rerouting or a full refund if your flight is cancelled.

Calculating Wizz Air compensation is straightforward once you know the distance and delay threshold. In most cases, passengers can receive between €250 and €600 per person.
